Why test?

All electrical appliances that plug into a power point (computers, heaters, fans, extension leads, multiboxes, tools, chargers etc) should be regularly tested and tagged in accordance with the AS/NZ 3760 Standard (In-Service Safety Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment) in order to make sure that all electrical equipment is safe to use. It is not mandatory but what is legally required is that equipment is electrically safe and maintained in a safe condition. Testing and tagging reduces the risk for your employees/workers using the equipment providing them with a safe working environment.

How often should you test?

All new appliances have to be tested and tagged before using them for the first time. The frequencies for retesting depend on the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used. This could be anywhere from 3 months (building, construction and demolition), 6 months (factories, warehouses and production), 12 months (general office equipment used or moved on a regular basis) or 5 years (computer hardware and appliances that never move and are not prone to damage or misuse).

We will discuss with you our recommendations before we start so there are no surprises come retesting time.

Who needs to test?

  • Factories
  • Offices & shops
  • Construction sites
  • Hotels & conference centres
  • Schools, universities
  • Community centres, church halls etc
  • Restaurants
  • Rented properties
  • Where appliances are hired/repaired
  • Contractors tools

How do you test?

Our Portable Appliance Tester (PAT 420) is designed to meet all electrical safety regulations and testing requirements of AS/NZS3760:2010 - it even tests portable RCDs.

When we test an appliance it gets assigned with a unique ID. We then enter information such as asset description, its location and test results. All data collected will be stored in our database and is available in both electronic and print format for future reference and it also serves as a full inventory list of all your electrical appliances.
